Knowing and interpretation

Tasting (dhawq)

الذوق

Editorial review pending

Dhawq, literally tasting, conveys immediacy of experience. It marks a contrast with purely descriptive knowledge without rendering philological analysis or reason irrelevant.

Distinctions and context

The experience claimed by an author is distinct from a later reader’s reception of the report. An account of tasting cannot, by itself, reproduce the event it describes.

Research question

Is taste invoked as a personal warrant or as a condition of understanding?
