Being and manifestation

The Breath of the All-Merciful

النَّفَس الرحماني

Editorial review pending

The Breath of the All-Merciful develops an analogy between breath, speech, and the manifestation of created forms. It is a metaphysical and exegetical image, not a physiological hypothesis.

Distinctions and context

Commentaries link the breath with the cloud (ʿamāʾ), divine words, and formed realities. The passages in the Futuhat and Fusus should nevertheless be distinguished by context and edition.

Research question

Is the passage using speech imagery, discussing the primordial cloud, or articulating mercy?
