Allusion (ishāra)

الإشارة

Editorial review pending

Ishāra indicates an allusive mode of signifying that cannot always be paraphrased as a direct proposition. The form of the utterance and its intended audience matter.

Distinctions and context

An image in poetry is not automatically a metaphysical axiom. Compare parallel passages and separate the author’s wording from the commentator’s extrapolation.

Research question

What does the allusion point toward in context, and what alternative readings remain?
